DESCRIPTION:You may have heard in the news that child care is a struggling business and that there is a severe shortage not only in Door County but throughout Wisconsin. What you may not realize is that the current funding model where parents pay tuition that is supposed to cover the costs of running the business is no longer viable. It costs so much more to operate a child care center these days and young families are already paying more for child care than a mortgage payment or typical college tuition. Most child care centers in operation today have a 1% -2% profit margin. When the unexpected happens\, their only solution is to raise tuition even higher or close. \nThe summit will feature national\, state and local speakers addressing the importance of child care\, early brain development\, the economic issues surrounding childcare\, and the return on investment that is possible with strategic planning for a long term\, sustainable future. \nWe know that child care is essential for a viable work force and a vibrant community and we know it will take a multifaceted approach to achieve solutions. That’s why your presence is so important. When smart leaders gather together and are given all the information\, they’re more likely to come up with creative solutions that best fit our particular and unique community.

SUMMARY:Hope Beyond the Hurt: Growing a Resilient Community
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE\nOur country is in a mental health crisis. Suicide rates were 30% higher in 2020 than 2000. (Center for Disease Control) \nDoor County is no exception. In fact\, rural communities generally experience higher rates of mental illness and suicide. Here in Door County\, we have a suicide rate of 20 per 100\,000 while the US rate is significantly less at 14 per 100\,000. (2023 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps) \nThe main culprits are lack of services and isolation. In Door County\, we have one mental health provider to 740 residents; that’s about twice as many people to provider ratio as the US average\, 340:1. (2023 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps) \nAccording to the 2021 Door County Youth Risk Behavior Survey\, 50% of high schoolers and 48% of middle schoolers are reporting anxiety and 30% of high schoolers and 29% of middle schoolers are reporting depression. \nWe saw a spike in teen self-harm and suicide contemplation in 2021. \nWe see a need to grow a more resilient country and that happens one community at a time. As we have a distinct issue of lack of providers\, this type of programming-an educational summit-is a proactive approach to instilling knowledge and skills in our community members to overcome their own trauma and be resilient as well as to teach and empower those skills in others. \nLET’S GROW A RESILIENT COMMUNITY TOGETHER!\n \n
